The general diving agenda in France is to explore and document the seafloor and slope descending from the Collanques, which is a remarkable geological feature on the south coast of France between Marseille and Cassis. It is a limestone massif that has been eroded forming fingers that jut into the Mediterranean Sea from which there are numerous freshwater springs that discharge above and below sea level.
Dr. Todd Kincaid’s interest is of course in the springs and spring/marine ecosystems. The expedition also has two graduate researchers on board who will be leading sample collection and documentation efforts that focus on coral and algae species in this region. Their work will be in part to support their own research through the University of Algarve and to support work with their colleagues from the Aix Marseille Universite and IFREMER.
