The Tongue Of The Ocean (TOTO) is a U-shaped, trench measuring approximately 30 by 240 kilometers (20 by 150 mi) originally formed as part of a fracture zone and then dramatically carved by erosion as sea level rose during multiple ice age events (remarkably evident at 60-160m / 195-525ft). Its depth varies from 1,100 m (3,600 ft) near the southern tip of Andros to well over 2,500 m (8,200 ft) in the north immediately offshore Chub Cay. TOTO’s only deep-water access is directly in front of Chub Cay and is combined with a cross flow from tidal exchange twice a day to/from the vast-shallow 60Nm wide Great Bahama Bank. Except for the deep-water ocean opening, the TOTO is surrounded by numerous islands, reefs, and shoals which make a peripheral shelter isolating it from many ocean disturbances, particularly high ambient noise and significant transient ship traffic. The low-noise, shallow-deep interface, and high-flow phenomenon combined with incredible benthic habitat have created an ideal zone for dense exotic marine life in both shallow and deep-water. Project Baseline’s goal, with your help is to Explore and Document the key factors supporting the many anomalies. In doing so, we will characterize and contrast the results with our previous documentation efforts in the Seychelles (Indian Ocean), Bermuda and the Azores as we determine why Chub Cay is such a marvel and learn to better manage this awe-inspring natural resource.
